What We Do

Our process is simple. We submit our writing to the group and then we critique those submissions. Simple, ay?

Monday Night

Monday night is our serious night. Currently we meet at the Panera Bread in Castleton (see map) at 7pm.

The Friday before is the deadline for submitting your work. We upload our submissions to our Yahoo! group. Over the weekend, we critique those submissions, and on Monday, we discuss them. We have many smart writers, so you’ll be sure to get insightful commentary on your work.

We Are Open and Affirming

We are open to all newcomers, regardless of their race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. If you have a problem with that, then please don’t join. We do not tolerate bigotry of any kind.

Some notes:

  • You will not get access to the Yahoo! group until you’ve come to at least one meeting. If your first time attending a meeting is on Monday, then it might be a bit boring. However, you’ll get to see the group in action. Consider it a kind of initiation ritual. But you may also come to the Friday meeting, which is a lot less structured, and there is no preparatory work necessary.
  • Submissions should be no longer than 3,500 words.
  • Five submissions maximum per meeting. If we have more than that, then the additional submissions are queued for the next Monday.

Friday Write Nite

We also meet every Friday at Starbucks (see Map) for “write nite.” The idea behind write nite is to get together, write, chat, and sometimes collaborate. It is unstructured time to do what you want in the company of other writers.

Sometimes, we do more chatting than writing. But most of us get something accomplished. And that’s important!

Often, we’ll go out to eat after Starbucks closes. We’ll hang out and have a few laughs.

No Guns Allowed!

If you carry a gun either concealed or openly, do not bring it to our meetings. If you do, you’ll be kicked out. We don’t tolerate guns.

We had a member bring a gun to our meetings. It made everyone uncomfortable. It’ll probably not happen again. But just in case …

This is not a refutation of gun ownership. We merely state that we personally don’t wish to be around them.

Some notes:

  • We talk about everything and anything. No topic is off the table. I think you get my meaning. If certain words or topics of discussion make you uncomfortable, be prepared to stretch your boundaries.
  • Friday write nite is a great place to throw out ideas and brainstorm. If you are considering a new or an existing project, bounce your ideas off us.
